I wanted to make something fun and easy for Valentine's Day that could be used in a variety of ways, so I created these simple but cute conversation hearts and glitter hearts.
This is a gift or decorating idea for a mom or grandma to make with a child, but these hearts are pretty enough that you will want to make some for your own decor. These sweet hearts can be used as a garland, as bowl fillers, or decorate a wreath. I'm sure you can use your own creativity to come up with even more ways to use them.
For Both Hearts You Will Need

- 1/2 inch thick sheet of Make It: Fun® STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam
- Design It:® Foam Cutter from FloraCraft (optional)
- Heart shaped cookie cutters (I used a jumbo size and a small, but any size is fine)
- Craft paint (red, mint green, lavender, pastel pink, yellow, sherbet orange,
and white)
- Craft brushes
- Elmer's Glue All
- Glitter (for glitter hearts only)
- Elmer's Glue All
- Glitter (for glitter hearts only)
How To Make Heart Shapes
1. Gently press a cookie cutter into the Styrofoam sheet. I used a small cookie
cutter for the glitter hearts and a jumbo size cookie cutter for the faux
conversation hearts, but any size you want to make them is fine. My cookie
cutter went through the foam. If yours doesn't, press until you see an indention
of the cookie cutter shape, then cut shape with the foam cutter.
Once the shape has been cut GENTLY press it out of the cookie cutter to avoid
breaking it. If the edges are ragged, rub your fingers around the edge and mash
the foam down a little. This will help you smooth the edges.
Glitter Hearts
1. Cut hearts as directed above. For a garland, I made 6 small hearts.
2. Paint hearts in your choice of color. This just hides the white Styrofoam in
case the glitter comes off. Allow the hearts to dry.
3. Liberally brush glue all over the heart including the edge. Sprinkle glitter
in your choice of color over the heart. When they are dry, have fun decorating
with them!
Conversation Hearts
1. For a garland, cut 5 jumbo hearts as instructed above.
2. Paint hearts in pastel colors just like the real candies. I've found using a
stiff brush works best to get the paint into the foam, but it may take 2 or 3
coats of paint to fully cover the hearts. Allow them to dry completely.
3. Using a darker colored paint (I used red to match the glitter hearts) and a
liner brush, paint cute saying in the middle of the hearts. If you need
inspiration, just copy the wording on real candies or personalize them with the
names of your loved ones.
Decorating Ideas
Garland
1. Cut a piece of ribbon or twine to the length you want. Make a loop on each
end and double knot to secure. These loops will be used for hanging the
garland.
2. Space hearts across ribbon or twine. Alternate conversation and glitter
hearts with a large bead between each heart. Hot glue to the twine. The garland
is ready to be hung on a mantel, mirror, wall, window, etc.
Bowl Fillers
Either style heart is pretty placed in a plate or a bowl for decoration.
Wreath
Did you see my Romantic Hearts and Lovebirds Wreath? The hearts on that wreath were the glitter hearts in this tutorial. They were
made with the jumbo cookie cutter and covered with German glass glitter.

Shannon, Terrific ideas! Love the garland, it looks so cute on your mantle. The wreath is lovely. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Really cute ideas! Love the garland!
These hearts are adorable. Love the garland. xo
Very cute project, Shannon! I love how you've used them in a banner, but I think they'd be just as nice grouped together in a bowl.
Shannon, these hearts are lovely and fun looking! I was wondering where you buy the styrofoam. Some styrofoam "melts" when you apply paint to it. Does this particular type of foam not melt or was the paint you used safe for styrofoam?
Hi Lynn-
The Styrofoam I used was just a regular sheet you find at the craft store.
I know what you mean about problems with paint because I've had issues with ruining Styrofoam when I've tried spray paint. I believe the chemicals in spray paint must react somehow with the foam.
However, the paint I used was just regular acrylic craft paint in tubes that you brush on. I've used this type of paint on Styrofoam many times and have never had the paint react to it.
For better coverage, use a stiff brush and apply 2-3 coats of paint.
Thanks for enjoying the project!
These are such cute ideas, Shannon! I love Valentine's Day!
